Postpartum blues and postpartum depression are both conditions that mothers commonly encounter after the birth of their baby. However, there are differences.....
Postpartum blues
-60-80% of moms will experience this condition.
-Thought to be due to hormonal changes.
-Symptoms peak 3-5 days after delivery.
-Symptoms may include tearfulness, feelings of overwhelm, sleep changes, mood swings, sadness. But despite these symptoms, the predominant mood is happy.
-Postpartum blues don't last more than 2 weeks.
Postpartum depression
-10-20% of moms will experience this condition.
-Symptoms continue to get worse and tearfulness, feelings of overwhelm, sleep changes, mood swings, sadness, guilt, and feelings of helplessness and hopelessness are common.
-Moms may find it difficult to take care of baby.
